About Us
The first level is roughly equivalent to grades ranging from kindergarten through grade two. It is designed for children between the ages of four and eight who are not yet prepared for a long day of seat work but have outgrown preschool. Children usually remain in this classroom for one or two years.  In Level 1 students will:
  1. Learn how to behave in a classroom setting
The first year of school is a time to learn the "rules of the road", the basic skills every child needs to acquire to get along in a group setting. It takes time for children to internalize these rules and to begin to appreciate the differences between a classroom setting and a home setting. At Calvary Christian Academy, your child will have the time he/she needs.
  2. Learn counting and calendar skills
Not all children start school with the same "number sense". While some children at this age may be ready to begin basic addition and subtraction, many are still developing their counting skills. That's why teachers rely on manipulatives and incorporate daily calendar lessons into the early math program.
  3. Learn about Jesus through simple stories and songs
It's never to soon to start teaching a child about God's Word. In the Level 1 classroom, teachers will use simplified versions of Bible stories combined with actual words from scripture to help lay a foundation of Biblical knowledge. Classic Bible songs, puppet shows, and art projects will complement and enhance learning and retention.
  4. Learn basic writing skills
Not all children are ready to begin writing letters and numbers at the same age, and often boys lag behind girls in fine motor development. Your child will be given the opportunity to develop skills through pre-writing exercises and activities and will be encouraged to learn to write when he/she is developmentally ready.
  5. Listen to read-alouds of high quality literature
Reading is about more than pronouncing words on a page. The best readers begin as avid listeners. While listening to great stories, children begin to sense the differences between written and spoken language, they develop an understanding of story structure, and they improve their comprehension skills considerably.
  6. Make crafts, play games, do "kitchen science"
Children develop many of the skills essential to later academic success through early concrete experiences. Much the learning that students are able to retain at this level comes from their engagement with the physical world. Teachers at this level primarily utilize activities that engage children's senses and peak their curiosity.
  7. Learn beginning phonics
Children vary in their readiness to learn to read, but most children at this age can be taught early phonetic awareness through songs, games, and manipulatives. There is no pressure for your child to begin reading at this level, but if your child is eager to read, he/she will be given the opportunity to learn at his/her own pace.
  8. Have fun!
Teachers are under pressure in public schools everywhere to ensure that all students meet the same goals. This has caused many school districts across the nation to reduce or even eliminate playtime and recess. This can cause children to dread school and to lose motivation for learning. That's why we make sure fun is a part of every child's day.
